每年在欧洲有将近40万儿童在第32周妊娠期的时候出生,全球范围内这一数字更是高达260万人次。2010年德国汉诺威儿童医院研究人员研究发现,从1993年至1998年间在该医院出生体重不足1千克的早产儿现在的状况。其中一部分早产儿由于参与了当时一项研究而有规律地使用了EPO,以增强造血功能,而其他早产儿则没有使用EPO。研究人员发现,当时使用了EPO的早产儿,日后出现身体残疾、智障的比例明显要比没有使用的低。瑞士日内瓦大学等机构的研究人员2014年在JAMA发表研究表明,如果在早产儿一出生的时候,就立即给他们使用促红细胞生成素(erythropoietin,EPO),就能减少大脑损伤。促红素是一种能刺激红细胞生成的激素。这项研究由日内瓦大学领导完成,范围涵盖了2005年至2012年年间在瑞士出生的495位儿童。而且更重要的是,这项研究聚焦于早产儿儿童的神经认知发育,参与者在两岁和五岁期间进行多项发育测试。而且,无论是早产儿严重不良结局、潜在的并发症发病率还是药物不良反应,试验组与对照组均无差异,显示出良好的安全性。最近一些meta也显示出早产儿使用EPO可能具有获益。因此,为了进一步证实
