研究发现，中年男性心率增加与未来11年内心脏病风险的增加有关。

静息心率是指，当身体处于静息状态时，每分钟的心跳次数，这通常随着年龄的增长而变化，心率越低，表明心血管健康状况越好。静息心率为每分钟50-100次/分被认为在正常范围内。

他们从普通人群中随机挑选了一组50岁以上的男性，1993年、1450人中有798人填写了有关生活方式、心血管疾病家族史和压力水平的调查问卷，他们接受了全面的体检，包括静息心率。

他们的静息心率分四类：≤55次/分；56-65次/分；66-75次/分；>75次/分。

研究者跟踪了1993-2003年期间心率的变化以及截至2014年心脏病/中风或其他任何疾病的治疗或死亡情况。

在为期21年的随访期间，最初的798名男性中，15%在71岁前死亡；28%患心血管疾病；14%患冠心病。

相比于心率低于55次/分的男性，静息心率高于55次/分的男性吸烟者居多，且体力活动更少，压力更大，心血管疾病的危险因素如高血压和肥胖更多见。

但静息心率>75次/分者的任何原因、心血管疾病和冠状动脉心脏病的死亡风险大约是静息心率≤55次/分者的两倍。

1993年至2003年，静息心率稳定者与在此期间静息心率增加者相比，未来11年心血管疾病风险降低44%。

此外，静息心率每增加1次/分，任何原因导致的死亡风险就增加3%，心血管疾病风险就增加1%，冠心病风险就增加2%。

研究人员指出，这是一项观察性研究，因此无法确定原因，此外，研究仅限于男性，参与者的年龄可能本身就是一个影响因素。

但是这些发现具有临床意义，他们认为，随着时间的推移监测静息心率的变化可能对预测未来心血管疾病风险很重要。
