他们采用的研究方法是进行横断面研究，对20岁至46岁之间的50例同卵双生和49例异卵双生的双胞胎进行了研究。在以圆盘为中心的眼底照片中，50°范围内使用盒计数法测量视网膜血管分叉数，并使用Pearson相关系数比较同卵双生和异卵双生的双胞胎的差异。 为了确定变异的遗传成分，他们采用Falconer公式和定量遗传模型。

他们发现，平均视网膜血管分叉数在同卵双生和异卵双生的双胞胎组之间没有显着性差异（1.505 vs. 1.495，P = 0.06）。同卵双生双胞胎间相关性明显高于异卵双生的双胞胎（0.108，P = 0.46），相当于分形维数为0.79的遗传力h2。在定量遗传模型中，54％的变异为显性遗传效应，46％的变异是个别环境决定的。

因此，他们认为，在年轻成年双胞胎中，视网膜血管的分支模式在同卵双生双胞胎中表现出较高的结构相似性。视网膜血管分形维数主要由遗传因素决定，占变异的54％。对于晚期生活中潜在血管疾病对视网膜造成的影响，视网膜血管系统的遗传因素可以有一定预测性。
