泪腺在保持眼睛表面润滑、保护眼睛免受环境损伤等方面发挥关键作用。泪腺功能障碍会引起泪膜的水分不足,这可能导致眼睛表面干燥,也称为缺水型干眼病。如果不能进行及时治疗,这种疾病可引起诸多疾病,包括频繁的眼睛感染,角膜溃疡和视力丧失。

目前的治疗手段不能治愈泪腺,而只是缓解部分症状。为了开发可持续和更加适宜的治疗方法,如体内泪腺再生或生物工程的泪腺植入物,需要对泪腺发育的分子机制深入研究。基于啮齿动物跟人类眼睛发育在结构和功能方面的相似性,有很多科学家以小鼠为模型,进行了广泛的研究,探索泪腺发育的信号传导和转录机制。
