结核病是由结核杆菌引起的慢性传染病，在印度的发病率和死亡率都较高。据《印度教徒报》近日报道，印度科学研究所传染病研究中心阿米特·辛格领导的研究团队发现，通过联合使用抗疟疾药物氯奎与结核病药物异烟肼，在8周内可基本清除小鼠和豚鼠肺部所有结核病菌，并可降低复发概率。相关研究成果发表在美国《科学转化医学》杂志上。

当机体受到病原体感染时，巨噬细胞这种免疫细胞的第一道防线是降低细胞pH酸碱度值，使之变为酸性环境。然而研究人员发现，轻度酸性环境非但不能控制结核病细菌，反而促使一小部分细菌继续繁殖和产生抗药性。研究人员假设，通过调整巨噬细胞中的酸碱度，也许会使细菌对药物敏感。

抗疟疾药物氯奎被证明能起到中和巨噬细胞中pH酸碱度的作用，使细菌不能在酸性环境中引发耐药性，这样抗结核病药物异烟肼就可以发挥作用。使用细胞系和小鼠巨噬细胞进行的体外培养研究显示，这两种联合药物治疗降低结核负荷比仅使用抗结核药物治疗的功效高出3至5倍。

为确定治疗后复发情况，研究小组在动物实验中先用药物组合完全清除掉受感染小鼠肺部的结核病细菌，8周后用药物抑制小鼠的免疫系统，再把它们置于高细菌含量的环境中。结果发现，5只仅使用异烟肼治疗的小鼠全部复发结核病，而使用联合治疗的5只小鼠中有3只仅感染了很少细菌。
