美国加州大学(University of California, San Diego)分子病理学专业博士 (Ph.D) 。现任中南大学湘雅医学院教授、南华大学校长、中国农工民主党湖南省委主委。政协湖南省第十二届委员会副主席、第十三届全国人民代表大会代表。主要从事细胞相互作用和神经变性疾病的病理机制研究。他的研究在国际上率先证明结合素(integrins)介导的细胞粘附是贴壁细胞存活和生长的必备条件
