冷冻干燥通常用于制药工业，保存化学性质活跃的液体和化合物。目前世界上只有一个母乳银行(法国)使用此存储方法母乳，关于冷冻干燥保持母乳的自然属性能力的研究相对缺乏。

CEU-UCH的研究者对来自65名的125份母乳进行了研究，数据表明冷冻干燥是比-20℃冰冻母乳更有效的母乳存储方式，保护抗菌性能与-80℃冰冻存储同样有效！

深度冰冻的母乳其营养和功能性质会在长时间内出现变质，但冷冻干燥不同，无论是营养物质的保存还是功能特性的保持均很好！研究者认为冷冻干燥是深度冰冻的可替代母乳存储方案，并将其推荐给所有的母乳银行。

母乳的抗菌性能是非常重要的,因为它对一个丰富肠道菌群的发展至关重要，可防止感染和改善不同食物的肠道耐受性。对于早产儿或低出生体重儿，其免疫系统发育不完善，这些属性是必不可少的。
