美国南加州大学阿尔茨海默症治疗研究所（ATRI）的研究人员正准备在全球范围内寻找适合服用实验性药物BAN2401的候选人，BAN2401预计能够减缓并阻止阿尔茨海默症的进展。

ATRI负责人保罗·艾森说：“BAN2401能够清除大脑内的斑块，我们相信患者在遭受重大、不可逆转的损害之前，尽早服用该药物会有巨大好处”。ATRI正在与哈佛研究人员合作进行这项研究，该研究将在全球范围内招募患者，使用正电子发射断层扫描来确定BAN2401能否降低β-淀粉样蛋白水平。

阿尔茨海默的真正成因至今不明，目前将阿尔茨海默视为一种神经退化疾病，并认为有将近七成的风险因子与遗传有关，其他的风险因子还有头部外伤、忧郁症和高血压。疾病的进程与大脑中的纤维状β-淀粉样斑块沉积和Tau蛋白有关。
