随着对血压更深入的研究，其复杂的病理生理学机制得以揭晓，遗传因素和环境因素结合了多血症的生理机制和途径最终导致高血压的出现。流行病学研究提高了我们对环境因素在高血压形成中的认识，尤其是关于合理的日常饮食和体育锻炼带来的益处。同一个家庭或社区往往受很多相似的环境因素影响，这也使得研究遗传在高血压形成中的确切作用具有挑战性。

在最新一期的Eur Heart J杂志中，Niiranen等人从一个比较有趣的角度出发洞察了这个问题。

他们分析了从Framingham心脏研究系统获得的跨越三代人的血压数据后，发现父母（第二代人）和祖父母（第一代人）更高的血压与第三代人的高血压风险有关。具体来说，独立于几个可测量的环境因素，包括体力活动水平、饮食中钠的摄入量和酒精摄入，家族中若有55岁前出现高血压的家族史，那么其后代的高血压风险很高。更重要的是，祖辈赋予孙辈的高血压风险以及所有孙辈中只有10％的人生活在Framingham的事实说明：共享环境因素对高血压风险的影响很小，而遗传效应可能更明显。当然作者描述的方法可能存在局限性，但总体上这些数据支持高血压遗传易感性的概念。
