同斯坦福大学的Pande Lab合作,Google Research发表了一篇题为“针对药物研发的大规模多任务网络”的文章。该文章描述了如何用不同来源的数据,更好地确定哪种化合物将作为“治疗多种顽疾的有效药物”。

文章本身并没有显示任何重大医学突破,它只是指出如何利用深度学习来处理巨大的数据库,并加速药物开发。深度学习指用大量数据训练人工神经网络系统,并从中提取出新信息。

Google Research博客的联合撰稿人解释说:

“这项工作一个令人鼓舞的结论是,模型能够利用不同的实验数据,提高多种疾病的预测精度。据我们所知,这也是首次对增加额外数据的效果进行量化检验,而且研究结果表明,更多的数据可以进一步的提高量化性能。”

Google表示,这次的工作量“比以往大18倍”,挖掘了200多个生物实验的37.8万个数据点。

随着许多大型科技公司开始进军深度学习领域,去年Twitter、Google和Yahoo都收购了深度学习创业公司,而Facebook和Baidu则聘用了大量的员工来研发这一领域,Netflix和Spotify也在开展相关工作。

另外,我们也不断看到未来的医疗如何倚重机器人、技术分析和人工智能。对于疾病治疗,它也同样越来越多依赖人工智能、大数据和深度学习,这和我们在Google和斯坦福的这项研究中看到的一样。

通过自动化和提高预测技术,这不仅加快了药物的研发过程,而且降低了成本。发现新治疗方法是一个高难度挑战,药物的各方面必须直击疾病的源头,同时还要满足严格的代谢和毒性的限制。而传统的药物研发需要许多年才能完成,并且研发过程中失败率很高。

简而言之,对数百万的化合物进行测试需要很长的时间,因此任何能增加成功组合几率的事,都是一件好事,而这也是机器学习可能有所帮助的地方。
