CircRNA是与通过遗传编码构建蛋白质的RNA不同的蛋白分子。科学家已经在哺乳动物中发现了数千种不同的circRNA,并且已经在某些circRNA和诸如癌症和神经疾病之类的病症之间建立了联系。此外,“心血管和肾脏疾病的大鼠模型表明,非编码基因组区域(如circRNA)与遗传复杂疾病如高血压相关,”研究人员写道。

研究小组分析了多种大鼠品系的肾组织,包括那些易患高血压和抗高血压的患者,以确定circRNA是否是导致高血压的因素。他们发现与血压正常的动物相比,肾脏中许多circRNA表达自身与高血压大鼠的差异。研究人员写道:“这些结果可作为进一步探索这些新表征的circRNA在心血管和肾脏疾病以及高血压中的作用的基础。”
