研究将471名受试者按照1999 Consensus Classification牙周炎的诊断标准分为慢性牙周炎(CP)， 侵袭性牙周炎(AgP)和牙周健康。使用OHIP-14调查问卷评估受试者与口腔健康相关的生活质量。结果包含：偶然出现口腔影响、相当经常或非常经常(OFOVO也是FOVO)的发生率、OHIP-14整体和结构域评分。采用Logistic和linear regression analyses检验评估牙周诊断和生活质量结果、修正过的吸烟、年龄、种族和人体质量指数之间的联系。

结果显示，与53.8%的牙周健康对照相比，有超过90%的牙周炎患者至少有1次偶然口腔影响、相当经常或非常经常(OFOVO)经历(P < .001)。调节协变量后，牙周炎组和牙周健康对照组之间的OHIP-14结果评分(P < .001)以及所有交叉OHIP-14结构域评分(P < .005)均存在显著性差异。因这些差异明显高于测量误差，所以它们具有一定的临床意义。在校正分析过程中，与OHIP-14评分比较时，AgP和CP之间未见明显差异。

结论：牙周炎患者的生活质量明显低于牙周健康个体，并且具有临床差异。与CP患者相比，AgP患者整体具有更差的OHRQoL，但是这些中等程度并富含深意的差异可以通过校正过程得以解释。
