药理学和神经科学教授Louis-Éric Trudeau耗时17年研究帕金森病、精神分裂症和药物成瘾患者的大脑。他认为,就像一个电机在高速运行,这些神经元细胞需要产生巨大的能量来运转。因此它们会尽早地使自己衰竭并凋亡。这将会对今后研发治疗药物具有意义,以帮助相应神经元细胞合理有效地使用资源,从而减少对自身的损害。

帕金森病是由于大脑中的一些区域病变如黑质神经细胞的死亡。帕金森病患者神经细胞释放多巴胺量减少,会导致患者出现相应症状,如震颤、缓慢、僵硬和平衡失调等表现。

3年来,研究人员一直在探究为什么帕金森病患者脑部一些区域的神经细胞中的线粒体会出现超负荷,他们发现,在这些区域的细胞具有非常复杂的结构,会释放许多化学信使使细胞时刻处于高代谢、高能状态。Trudeau教授指出,他们的研究及产出的相应药物能使相应神经元细胞的线粒体减轻负荷。“跟一个电机相似,”教授说,“一辆汽车的电机如果过热就会燃烧更多的燃料,因此,这辆汽车也不能使用很久。”

随着我们年龄的增长,细胞结构的复杂性也会使脑细胞变得脆弱,它们更容易出现损伤和死亡,因此易导致引发帕金森病。

因此,药物研发十分重要。同时需要采取更进一步的研究,以便为帕金森病患者带来更多希望。
