炎症性肠病（Inflammatory Bowel Disease, IBD）是一组特定的肠道慢性疾病的统称，主要包括克罗恩氏症和溃疡性结肠炎两种。除此之外，还有一些较为少见的结肠病变，称为未定型结肠炎。Vedanta Biosciences联合创始人兼首席执行官Bernat Olle博士说：“有明显的证据表明肠道微生物在IBD发病机制中具有重要作用。目前的治疗方法能够有效阻断炎症介质，但没有解决肠道微生物的异常改变，而这些改变则可能是驱动炎症的根源。据我们所知，VE202是第一个基于合肠道微生物的自身免疫性候选药物。
