牙周炎是一种临床病症，涉及支撑牙齿的韧带和骨骼的炎症。当牙龈炎未经治疗并持续存在时，就会发生牙周炎。它是成人牙齿脱落的重要原因，也是全球最常见的疾病之一，影响全球约20-50％的人口。大约有7.43亿人（约占全球人口的11.2％）患有严重的牙周炎，而牙周炎可以增加心血管疾病、糖尿病、关节炎和妊娠并发症的风险。
