Faith及其同事研发出了一种测序方法来准确追踪这些菌株。他们用这种被称作LEA-seq的方法对37人的粪便中的微生物群落进行了采样，他们中有4人当时正在参加一个为期32周的进食流质饮食的项目，而其余的人则按其喜好进食。Faith及其同事发现，在采样者中有60%的细菌菌株在长达5年的时间中仍然保持着稳定。研究人员估计，某些菌株甚至会持续不变几十年。通过评估这些人的微生物株的随着时间的推移而改变及/或当那些吃特别饮食而减肥的人的微生物株的改变，研究人员发现，体重减轻对微生物株组成的改变比时间的推移要有更明显的影响。这表明，肠道微生物群的改变可作为宿主健康及功能的标志物。通过比较相关及不相关个体的全部微生物基因组，研究人员还发现，家庭成员共同拥有某些相同的微生物株，提示我们在很早的时候通过我们的父母而得到的微生物株能够为我们整个一生提供他们的代谢产物。在目前针对微生物组对健康的影响的研究继续进行的情况下，由本研究提供的对人类肠道微生物群稳定性的见解可被当作是一种参考工具。与此同时，由Faith及其同事研发的新型、低误差测序方法可能会让用于个性化疾病预防的常规粪便采样变得更加可行。
