1983年，Harald zur Hausen等人首次发现生殖器官癌患者的活检样本中存在一种特定的人类乳头瘤病毒亚型（HPV-16）；
1999年，研究者确定了HPV是宫颈癌的主要致病因子；
2002年，首次发表了针对HPV-16的VLP衍生疫苗的临床试验结果，证实了其疗效；
2004年，Harper等人证实接种针对HPV 16和18的二价疫苗（Cervarix）可能会降低宫颈癌风险；
2006年，默沙东研制成功的第一支预防宫颈癌的HPV疫苗Gardasil（针对HPV 6、11、16和18）获得美国FDA批准，随后Cervarix获得欧洲EMA批准；
2014年和2015年FDA和EMA随后批准了Gardasil-9，该疫苗可预防9种HPV感染。
尽管疫苗研发取得了一系列成功，但HPV疫苗接种的潜力才刚刚开始实现，目前仍存在着一些挑战，如：HPV疫苗接种计划缺乏广泛的实施，公众对疫苗的不信任等。
