在疫苗成功被开发前，传统的遏制和预防方法是控制该疾病的主要武器。冠状病毒和流行性感冒等呼吸道病毒致死的主要原因是急性呼吸窘迫综合症（ARDS），ARDS是一种进行性疾病，其特征是由于体液积聚导致血氧水平降低。ARDS的唯一治疗方法是氧气疗法以及呼吸机支持。另外，利尿剂用于增加排尿，以控制体液水平，以防止肺部积液。

BXT-25的尺寸比血细胞小5000倍，可将氧气输送至全身。BXT-25的半衰期为9小时，并将持续循环直至被肝脏处理。在此期间，它将从肺部吸收氧气，并将其输送到需要氧气的全身器官和组织。只要这些器官继续接受氧气，患者就可以生存。这种疗法可以为患者提供足够的时间来康复。
