许多研究表明，纤维肌痛（FM）具有很强的家族成分。然而，这些研究几乎都局限于“原发性” FM的患者个体，即没有其他伴随性疾病的FM。当前的2011-16 FM诊断标准结合了疼痛身体部位的数量和躯体症状的严重程度来构建评分（FM评分）。这项研究估算了不同性别和年龄组FM评分的遗传度，以确定遗传度高的患者亚组，而这有助于未来遗传研究的设计。


研究人员收集了在密歇根大学接受择期手术的26,749名欧洲血统患者的数据（密歇根州基因组计划研究，MGI）。使用全基因组关联研究（GWAS）数据和线性混合模型，按照年龄和性别分类估算了基于SNP的FM评分遗传度。

总体而言，FM评分的估算遗传度为13.9％（SE=2.9％）。≤50岁个体的估算FM评分遗传度最高（23.5％; SE=7.9％），而60岁以上个体最低（7.3％; SE=8.1％）。当将FM作为病例对照表型进行分析时，这些模式保持不变。尽管不同年龄组女性平均FM评分比男性高约30％，但不同性别间的FM评分遗传度没有显著差异。
