牙周病始发于口腔微生物群的生态失调，它与宿主的免疫反应下调相关联。尽管对于生态失调的引发知之甚少，但已有研究显示，H2O2产物通过一些共栖细菌能够抑制致病生物的生长，此为生态失调的主要机制之一。现代模型强调的是菌斑生物膜所形成独特的微生物生态学本质以及它们从健康（动态平衡）到疾病（生态失衡）过程的转变。然而，对于它们自身毒力如何改变以及宿主反应如何却了解甚少。这篇研究的目的是为了评估致病生物毒力基因的表达以及来源于同一生态环境下的动态平衡和生态失衡生物膜的宿主反应差异。研究采用定量聚合酶链式反应对致病生物的生长定量化。通过细菌毒力和细胞炎症基因的表达分析以及细胞因子酶联免疫吸附测定检测细菌毒力差异以及炎症反应的潜在差异。结果显示，与动态平衡下的生物膜相比，诱导生态失衡生物膜的致病生物显著增加。并且，生态失衡生物膜所有致病生物的主要毒力基因表达均明显上调。暴露于这些生态失衡生物膜下的上皮和成纤维细胞内的白细胞介素(IL)-6， IL-1β， 肿瘤坏死因子-α和基质金属蛋白酶8的表达显著上调，特别是趋化因子CXCL8 (IL-8)。相反，动态平衡以及有益生物膜下的mRNA和蛋白表达变化显示
