至今为止,我们对于推动海马神经发生的年龄依赖性衰退的机制尚未完全了解。神经干细胞(NSCs)的进行性丧失是一个主要因素,但真正的神经源性输出最初取决于每个给定时间点激活的NSCs的实际数量。因为活化的NSCs的比例相对于总群体保持恒定,所以活化的NSC的实际数量与总NSC池平行地下降。

最近,研究人员调查了NSCs中与衰老相关的变化,发现至少有两个不同的NSCs群体。α型,维持经典的1型放射状形态,是大多数NSC有丝分裂活动的细胞类型;和ω类型,其特征在于增加的反应性形态复杂性,和即使在促激活激发下也保持更低的分裂概率。

最后,研究人员的结果表明,α型NSCs能够转化为ω型细胞,并且这种表型和功能变化可能通过与衰老相关的慢性炎症促进。
