周围神经病变是一种神经损伤,影响多达68%的糖尿病患者。患有糖尿病相关性神经病的人可能会出现诸如手脚无力,麻木和疼痛等症状。脚部症状可能导致步行和平衡控制困难。

研究人员研究了三组成年志愿者:一组患有糖尿病和糖尿病相关的周围神经病(“神经病”),另一组患有糖尿病而没有神经病(“糖尿病”),对照组既没有糖尿病也没有神经病(“对照”)。研究人员在标准步行测试中观察志愿者,以测量跟腱在行走时储存和释放的能量。研究小组还测量了膝盖和脚踝的弯曲强度和能力以及步行测试期间小腿肌肉的变化。在健康人群中,跟腱在运动过程中储存并释放大量能量,这将使小腿肌肉需要消耗的能量最小化。

与对照组相比,糖尿病和神经病变组的跟腱有更多的僵硬,关节活动范围更小。研究人员解释说,肌腱刚度增加意味着肌腱中储存的能量较少,这使得小腿肌肉工作更加困难。研究小组写道:“这些结果强烈表明糖尿病和[糖尿病相关周围神经病]患者跟腱的能量减少是导致这些患者代谢[行走耗能]增加的重要因素。”储存能量较少且行走成本较高可能导致行动能力下降和糖尿病并发症风险增加。
