研究人员对972名心衰住院患者检测了循环中TMAO水平,TMAO主要来源于左旋肉碱,左旋肉碱则是在肠道消化红肉时产生。

在获取TMAO检测结果后的1年随访时间里,发生了72例住院期间死亡,268例任何原因导致的死亡,384例因心衰死亡和再入院。

研究结果表明,研究开始时有较高TMAO水平的心衰患者,在接下来的12个月里,因心衰死亡和再入院风险更高。

作者考虑到TMAO是由红肉消化后的左旋肉碱代谢产生,而TMAO与急性心衰不良预后相关,推测红肉是否与心衰有关。不过红肉不是左旋肉碱的唯一来源,牛奶、奶酪、全谷物等也有,只是含量要少一些,能量饮料中也有。

先前关于肉食者和素食者的研究表明,肉食者左旋肉碱代谢形成TMAO,对心脏的影响更大。但是这些结果到目前都没有得到很好的解释,以后还需要更多的研究。

比如每个人肠道微生物的差异,会导致左旋肉碱代谢到TMAO的差异,饮食或肠道微生物对TMAO的产生或心衰的不良预后又该负多少责任,仍是未知的。
