脂肪酸是人体细胞的基本能量和结构来源。它们通常不会在人体循环中自由存在。脂肪酸代谢的改变与糖尿病、子痫前期、心脏病和一些传染病有关。非酯化脂肪酸(NEFA)水平升高可能导致细胞功能障碍和脂肪毒性。由于生理脂肪酸是与白蛋白结合运输的,我们在此提出一种简单而廉价的测试方法,包括白蛋白等电聚焦测定,以测量潜在的系统NEFA细胞毒性。

为验证该方法的有效性,对40例危重病人和11例对照者的51份血清样本进行白蛋白等电聚焦,并与高效液相色谱法测定的NEFA/白蛋白比值进行比较。我们称这种方法为白蛋白饱和度测试。这项测试可能向医生表明潜在的NEFA脂肪毒性,指导他们更好地管理病人。白蛋白饱和度测试可以通过一种廉价的检测方法来指出血清白蛋白NEFA的饱和度,这种检测方法可以在任何护理机构进行。
