对于强非对称性听力损失的患者,标准的临床实践涉及通过同时向另一只耳朵呈现噪声来测试听力阈值较高耳朵的语言清晰度。然而,心理声学和功能性核磁共振成像(fMRI)研究表明上述方法可能存在问题,因为对侧噪声对任务处理有干扰作用。此外,fMRI研究显示对侧噪声对大脑活动的影响取决于任务处理的偏侧性。当任务相关刺激呈现给正在处理任务的同侧半球时,对侧噪声的影响则更强。

最近,有研究人员使用了Oldenburg句子测试(OLSA)测试了四种不同水平的对侧噪声对语音清晰度的影响。前期通过使用fMRI的视觉语音测试来评估语音处理的皮质侧向化。结果表明,65或80 dB SPL的OLSA对侧噪音显著降低了单词的清晰度,而与语音呈现在哪只耳朵上无关。在左侧言语处理的参与者中,当言语呈现给左耳时,50 dB SPL的对侧OLSA噪声能够导致言语清晰度的显著降低;也就是言语同侧呈现给主要处理言语的半球。

最后,研究人员指出,在标准临床实践中使用的对侧噪声,不仅妨碍听力较好耳朵的信息,而且还可能妨碍语音的中枢处理
