该研究纳入了26名30-45岁体重正常的成年人,习惯性每晚睡7-9小时,参与5个夜晚的2阶段试验,一个是短时间睡眠(4小时),一个是习惯性睡眠(9小时)。习惯性睡眠的数据被用于当前分析。在前4天,参与者进行控制饮食,第5天的食物摄入则由参与者自己决定。通过线性回归测定日间食物摄入量和5天夜间睡眠的关系。

研究数据显示,3天控制饮食和1天自由饮食下的睡眠时间没有差异。不过自由饮食后的慢波睡眠更少(SWS, P = 0.0430),潜伏期更长(P = 0.0085)。摄入更多的纤维与更少的1期(P = 0.0198)和更多的SWS(P = 0.0286)相关。饱和脂肪所占能量百分比与更少的SWS相关(P = 0.0422)。糖和其他非糖和纤维的碳水化合物所占能量百分比越高与觉醒有关(P = 0.0320 、0.0481)。

研究结果显示,摄入纤维过少、饱和脂肪和糖摄入过多会导致睡眠质量的下降,更容易觉醒,难以恢复睡眠。不过饮食与睡眠障碍的关系还需要以后更多方面的研究。
