疟疾一直以来是一个可怕的存在。在被携带疟原虫病原体的蚊子叮咬后的几秒钟内,疟原虫会侵入宿主的皮肤和血管,侵入肝脏,并埋藏在其中。直到成千上万的被感染细胞破裂进入血液,引发致命的血液感染。

如今,来自西雅图儿童研究所的研究者们组首次描述了疟原虫病原体如何在蚊子唾液腺中提前为这次“旅行”做准备。研究人员认为,这一新发现可能有助于开发阻止寄生虫传播的新策略。

该论文的资深作者Stefan Kappe博士说:“疟原虫在蚊子体内就已经具备了感染肝脏的蛋白质蓝图,而准备这一蓝图的时间则远远超过了在人体内制造蛋白质的时间。”相关结果发表在最近的《 Nature Communications》杂志上。

西雅图儿童医院的Kappe实验室致力于了解疟原虫的复杂生物学特性以及宿主对感染的免疫反应。他们正在探索新的策略在多个阶段预防感染的发生。

Kappe实验室的前博士后 Scott Lindner博士以及西雅图系统生物学研究所的客座科学家Kristian Swearingen博士也为发表的论文做出了贡献。

Lindner和Swearingen与Kappe专注于研究疟原虫在蚊子体内这一阶段合成的RNA分子和蛋白质。Swearingen说:“我们发现蚊子体内的‘孢子’可以制造并储存所有这些蛋白质‘蓝图’。”

Kappe解释说,这种策略使疟疾寄生虫具有在蚊虫叮咬后数秒内发起攻击的能力。“寄生虫已经预先计划,并且准备好了感染人体所需的。” 根据Swearingen的说法,他们研究中揭示的‘蓝图’最终可能会导致科学家找到防止疟原虫感染的新方法。
