妊娠期疟疾 (malaria in pregnancy， MIP) 会影响胎盘血管系统的发育并且对胎儿造成负面影响，但是目前安全并有效缓解这些症状的疗法很少。一氧化氮 (nitric oxide) 在血管系统的发育中起到重要作用，而L-精氨酸 (l-arginine) 不但是合成一氧化氮的前体，而且是人体需要的必要氨基酸之一。加拿大多伦多大学 (University of Toronto) 的研究人员认为体内精氨酸水平下降可能在MIP的病理机制中起到重要作用。在对MIP患者的研究中，他们发现她们体内精氨酸水平下降，抑制一氧化氮生物合成的抑制剂的水平上升。当研究人员为模拟MIP的怀孕母鼠提供精氨酸补剂之后，他们可以减少母鼠流产风险并且增加幼鼠的体重。进一步研究发现精氨酸补剂可以恢复血管增生信号通路并且改善胎盘血管系统的发育。这项研究表明一氧化氮生物合成信号通路异常可能是MIP病理的重要部分，并且为改善怀孕结果提供了一种新策略。
