由线粒体稳态丧失引发的突出表型是细胞衰老，其特征在于生长停止和衰老相关的分泌表型（SASP）。 
最近，来自NIH的研究人员将富含G的RNA序列结合因子1（GRSF1）鉴定为与该反应有关的主要线粒体蛋白。 由于蛋白质稳定性降低，衰老细胞中的GRSF1水平有所下降，并且降低GRSF1丰度能够导致线粒体应激，进而导致超氧化物产生增加，DNA损伤灶增加和细胞增殖减少。
此外，减少GRSF1增加了衰老相关的β-半乳糖苷酶（SA-β-gal）的活性以及SASP因子白细胞介素6（IL6）的产生和分泌。
总之，该研究结果表明，细胞衰老过程中GRSF1水平的下降有助于削弱线粒体功能，提高ROS和DNA损伤，抑制生长，并促进炎症反应。
