收集小腿的皮肤活检（86名FMS患者，35名健康对照）。用针对蛋白基因产物9.5、降钙素基因相关肽、P物质、CD31和神经丝200的抗体与皮肤进行免疫反应，寻找小纤维亚型。评估每名患者的两个皮肤切片。在每个皮肤切片上，检查两个区域（每个150 x 700μm）的皮肤神经纤维长度（DNFL）。

研究发现与健康对照相比，FMS患者与血管接触的纤维DNFL降低（p<0.05）。而其他神经纤维亚型没有差异。

研究发现FMS患者与血管接触的皮肤神经纤维少于对照组。该发现的病理生理相关性尚不清楚，但这可能与FMS患者通常报告的热耐受性降低有关。

纤维肌痛综合征(Fibramyalgia syndrome,FMS)是一种病因不明的以全身广泛性疼痛以及明显躯体不适症状为主要特征的一组临床综合征，常伴有疲劳、睡眠障碍、晨僵以及抑郁、焦虑等精神症状。目前并没有特别的血液或影像学方法诊断纤维肌痛综合征。血沉、CRP在这类患者中通常并不升高。
