在这项研究报告中,研究者表示抗氧化剂化合物包括白藜芦醇—诱导DNA破坏和细胞死亡,可能会带来改进了的抗癌药物。Kyungjae Myung及其同事开发了一种高通量阵列并用它筛选了4000多种化合物以研究其导致DNA破坏的能力,这一性质可能表明了它们作为化学疗法药物的潜力。在筛查发现的99种活性分子中,这组科研人员发现了22种抗氧化剂,人们目前正在对其中一些抗氧化剂的抗衰老的潜力以及治疗包括心血管疾病和II型糖尿病">糖尿病在内的各种疾病的能力进行使用和研究。用其中三种抗氧化剂——白藜芦醇、大豆异黄酮和黄芩素——来处理的正在分裂的细胞时出现了DNA破坏和细胞死亡。

然而,进一步的分析表明,与许多传统的抗癌药物不同,这些化合物不是诱变剂。白藜芦醇和大豆异黄酮还能够选择性地杀死耐多药癌细胞,这让它们成为了绝佳的化疗候选药物。这组作者说,尽管在该研究中发现的这些抗氧化剂化学物可能会带来改善了的抗癌药物,它们导致DNA破坏和细胞死亡的能力引起对用它们治疗其他疾病的潜在用途的担忧
