针对这项研究，来自德国布伦瑞克工业大学的Klemens Rottner在同期Science期刊上发表一篇标题为“Formin' filaments at a faster CLIP”的文章，也解释了微管和肌动蛋白丝在真核生物细胞骨架形成中发挥的作用。

为了让细胞维持它的形状，肌动蛋白丝必需延长到支持细胞形状所需的长度。但是当细胞长到合适的大小和形状时，它需要容纳它的所有组分，这就必需有一种机制调节它的生长。之前的研究已证实微管起到这种的作用，但是它是如何发挥作用的在某种程度上一直是个谜。

在这项新的研究中，研究人员发现CLIP-170微管确实非常紧密地结合到一种被称作formin的蛋白上，这样做就能够在确定肌动蛋白丝将延伸多长上发挥作用，或者更具体地说，加快肌动蛋白丝延长。

为了更多地了解蛋白CLIP-170在细胞骨架形成中发挥的作用，研究人员在实验室中将一种荧光蛋白加入到蛋白CLIP-170中的一些上，然后在细胞成熟期间，利用单细胞显微镜观察发生了什么。除了加快肌动蛋白丝延长外，研究人员还观察到CLIP-170与mDia1二聚体结合在一起，追踪肌动蛋白丝末端和促进聚合化，这种聚合化提供一种保护帽。研究人员还发现微管末端诱导mDia1/CLIP-10复合体发挥作用，从而导致肌动蛋白丝快速生长。他们注意到这种肌动蛋白丝生长对神经元中的树突生长是特别不可或缺的。
