受试者体内的生物变异数据(CVI)用于建立检测的质量要求，同时，也用来计算临床实验室定量检测的参考变异值(RCV)。CVI通常是通过在受控条件下从少量个体中抽取大量样本来确定的。这里提出的方法是一种使用从大量个体中收集的用于常规临床目的少量的样本(n = 2)新策略。

研究人员从常规病理数据库中提取成人患者的双序列结果，用于29种常见的化学和血液学检查。利用统计方法，确定了26个试验中各结果对比值的中心高斯分布，确定了各结果的总变异量。然后通过消除分析变差的影响计算了CVI。

该方法对CVI进行了估计，对于本研究中的大多数分析物来说，该方法与已发表的值具有良好的一致性。数据显示，性别、年龄或样本之间的时间影响最小。分析物浓度对分布有一定的影响，第一个结果离总体均值越远，随后的结果越接近总体均值。

这里描述的方法可以快速而简单地生成CVI数据。该技术不需要患者干预，并可复制临床环境，尽管它可能并不普遍适用。此外这里描述的平均值的效果可以更好地解释连续的患者结果。
