农杆菌是一种重要的植物病原菌,通过侵染植物伤口将细菌 DNA 整合到植物基因组,从而诱导宿主产生冠瘿瘤或发状根,影响农作物产量。农杆菌侵染植物的分子机理已有大量研究报道,但在成功侵染植物后,农杆菌如何关闭那些致病基因的表达一直悬而未决。

张炼辉课题组研究发现农杆菌成功侵染植物伤口后,可利用植物伤口修复时所产生的高浓度蔗糖诱导农杆菌表达产生一种特异性水解酶 SghA,该酶的表达促使植物释放出体内原来处于络合状态的水杨酸。

作为植物激素,水杨酸同时也是一种重要的响应逆境的信号分子,诱导宿主产生免疫反应。农杆菌则巧妙地利用其作为外源信号,及时关闭致病基因的表达,从而降低病原菌细胞的能源消耗,以保证其在侵染成功后的生存繁殖。

该研究不但揭示了一种全新的病原菌—宿主相互作用的分子机理,而且为控制植物冠瘿病和提高植物转基因效率提供了新的思路和理论基础。
