人类促红细胞生成素（erythropoietin,EPO）是一种酸性糖蛋白，90%以上EPO由肾脏皮质间质细胞产生，少量于肝脏等器官组织合成。EPO是红细胞生成的主要调节激素，与EPO受体结合，促进红系定向干细胞分化成熟。EPO分泌不足或活性降低是引起肾性贫血的最主要原因。1989年，通过基因重组技术研制的重组人促红细胞生成素（recombinant human erythropoietin,r HuEPO）开始临床应用。
