2014年7月，美国胸外科协会(AATS)在线发布了胸外科手术围术期房颤和房扑的预防和管理指南。此外，指南还为管理有房颤病史的胸外手术患者提供了指导。指南指出这些患者发生卒中、心衰和其他并发症的风险很高，管理他们的抗心律失常药物治疗和围手术期的抗凝治疗是一个挑战，因此术前心脏咨询对这些患者而言是非常实用的。指南编写组主席Gyorgy Frendl博士（布莱根妇女医院）表示，事实上我们并不知道房颤发生的明确原因，但是很显然，如果你要在心脏或肺上做手术，除了很可能会伤肺之外，术后房颤的发生风险也会很高。因此，外科医生在心胸手术中应该格外注意这一点，尝试去判断其发生的原因以及有没有什么方法能去预防或者减少事件的发生。当然答案是不会很简单的。AATS指南编写组表示此次新指南的起草人员包括心脏病学家、电生理学家、ICU医师、麻醉医师、心胸外科医师和临床药师。指南相关内容已发表于2014年9月23日的《心胸外科杂志（JTCS）》上。
