据疾控中心统计，最近一周来，报告流感发病率超过往年的州，从之前的得克萨斯、路易斯安那、亚拉巴马和密西西比4个州一下子跃升至10个州。“这意味着美国已经进入典型的流感季节。”疾控中心流感部门医疗官员迈克尔·杨(Michael Young)27日表示，流感季通常开始于冬季，并在1月或2月达到高峰，唯一非典型的是，今年初期最为常见的流感菌株是甲型H1N1流感，其曾于2009年在美国大爆发，俗称“猪”流感。

“我们收到比以往更多的年轻人和中年人受病毒感染引发严重呼吸系统疾病甚至死亡的报告，其中很多病例都感染了甲型H1N1流感。”疾控中心流感专家布里斯(Joseph Bresee)指出，其他流感病毒主要攻击幼儿、老年人和患有慢性疾病的人群，而甲型H1N1流感病毒则对年轻的成年人(18-49岁)和中年人(50-64岁)更具威胁，“这是一个提醒，流感可以引发很严重的疾病。”

在南部的得克萨斯州，流感广泛存在于各个领域。一名十几岁的女孩26日死于甲型H1N1流感。休斯敦卫生部门发言人巴顿(Katy Barton)证实，有流感症状的急诊患者人数是近5年来最多的，截至目前，大休斯敦地区已有13人因感染甲型H1N1病毒死亡，这名女孩则是首例儿童死亡病例。得州儿童医院报告有7个孩子患上流感，其中3人仍处于重症监护中。

资料显示，每年大约有2.4万名美国人死于流感。疾病预防控制中心和医疗保健专家指出，接种疫苗是应对流感最好的方式，今年的流感疫苗能够预防甲型H1N1病毒，因此呼吁6个月大婴儿以上民众接种疫苗和正确洗手。迈克尔·杨建议年轻人确保经常洗手，咳嗽时要挡住嘴巴，以帮助预防感染或阻止传播流感，如果生病了则尽量避免外出。

美国疾控中心研究小组估计，曾于2009年在全球蔓延的甲型H1N1流感疫情共夺走28.4万条生命，当时美国有5900万人感染，其中1.2万人死亡。
