大脑运用“胡萝卜加大棒”教人们如何表现

你作了一个选择,但结果并不是太好。大脑将如何确保你下次会做得更好?一项日前发表于《自然》杂志的研究表明,大脑中似乎存在一个“发放”奖励和惩罚的中枢,从而强化关键的生存技能。

“设想一下,你去一家餐馆,希望享用一顿美味的饭餐。”来自美国纽约冷泉港实验室的Bo Li表示,“如果食物超出你的预期,你可能会再次光顾;如果食物令人失望,将来你会避开这家餐馆。”

Li带领的团队发现,大脑基底节区的一部分,即被称为从松果体缰投向苍白球的核团(GPh),在这一过程中发挥了关键作用。研究人员训练小鼠将特定的声音线索同提供一杯水作为奖励或者往其脸上吹气作为惩罚联系起来,然后通过切换它们的角色令其感到吃惊。

当希望获得水的小鼠被施以往脸上吹气的惩罚时,GPh神经元会变得尤其活跃。不过,当小鼠获得意料之外的奖励时,这些神经元的活动受到抑制。

进一步的试验证实,一旦被激活的GPh神经元在大脑中强化了这种惩罚,大脑中规划行动方案且与奖赏有关的化学物质——多巴胺的水平便会降低。然而,当这些神经元受到抑制时,多巴胺的水平会增加,从而强化有利的行为。通过这种方式,GPh运用“胡萝卜加大棒”策略,让人们记住好的和坏的生存策略之间的差异。

为证明该机制会影响未来行为,该团队利用一种被称为光遗传学的技术干预这一中枢,即人工激活或抑制GPh神经元。当小鼠通过训练意识到,两个出水端口中仅有一个会给它们水喝时,激活神经元改变了它们的行为,导致其尝试错误的端口来获取水。
