美国疾病防控中心数据显示，2015年包括处方用药和海洛因在内的阿片类药物致美国3.3万人死亡，人数达到史上之最。

据报道，普莱斯8日告诉记者：“总统当然相信我们会将其作为紧急事件处理，而且这确实是紧急事件。”普莱斯还说，尽管白宫正在考虑一切可能的选择以对抗阿片类药物危机，但白宫并不打算在此时宣布该问题为国家紧急事件，原因是这个问题无需宣布就可以解决。

普莱斯还表示，美国卫生及公共服务部正在出台一份综合计划解决这一问题，并将在未来短时间内将该计划提交给特朗普。官方表示，阿片类药物问题依然是美国政府的首要问题之一。
