最近，以英国制药巨头阿斯利康等公司为代表的产业界呼吁立刻重新重视并支持新型抗生素的研究，否则人类将为今天的不作为尝尽苦果。产业人士在这篇发表在the Financial Times上的公开信中写道，如果当前抗药菌的问题不能得到控制，到2050年将有1000万人死于超级菌带来的疾病。此外，阿斯利康还强调世界各国还将为此付出高达100万亿美元的经济代价。

这封公开信中指出，距离上一次新型抗生素的出现已经过去了30年之久，许多生物医药企业因为该领域巨大的研发难度而推出该领域研究。尽管近几年来包括阿斯利康、葛兰素史克以及默沙东等医药巨头纷纷重返抗生素研发领域，但对于目前严峻形势仍然是杯水车薪。

这封公开信的署名人之一BioIndustry Association主席Steve Bates认为政府应当在这其中起到重要作用。首先政府应该对进行抗生素研发的企业进行奖励，此外还应当展开切实措施制止抗生素滥用。此外，政府还应该设立保障制度以避免公司将所有精力都放在销量最好的项目上，以平衡临床需求。

而目前英国政府已经要求著名经济学家Jim O'Neill于明年春天提供一份相关报告。今年五月份，Jim O'Neill就曾经呼吁为新型抗生素的临床前研究提供至少20亿的研发经费。
