2019年1月16日，这项研究成果以“Do Stair Climbing Exercise “Snacks” Improve Cardiorespiratory Fitness？ ”为题发表在《应用生理学，营养学和新陈代谢》（Applied Physiology， Nutrition， and Metabolism）期刊上。加拿大汉密尔顿麦克马斯特大学运动机能学教授Martin Gibala博士是该研究的通讯作者。

Gibala教授和团队研究了短时间爬楼梯(一定台阶数)对吸氧峰值（VO2peak）的影响。他们共招募了24个人（久坐不动），分成两组。其中，一组参与者每天爬3次楼梯，间隔1-4小时，持续6周。另一组则不锻炼。

对比后发现：这种“短间歇”的运动可以带来一系列健康益处，包括更好的心血管健康，改善胰岛素抵抗，以及降低过早死亡的风险。

“我们知道冲刺间歇训练有效，但我们有点惊讶地看到爬楼梯运动也很有效。”研究报告的共同作者，英国大学运动机能学助理教授Jonathan Little博士，根据实验结果认为：“白天，在喝咖啡或者去洗手间的空闲，起劲的爬几段楼梯足以提高那些久坐不动的人的健康状况。“

Gibala教授希望通过这项研究能“使人们更容易将间隙运动纳入他们的日常生活中。”他还建议，那些在办公楼工作或住在公寓楼里的人可以在早上，午餐和晚上大力攀爬几段楼梯，要“知道他们正在进行得是很有效的锻炼”。
