ELF5是一个转录因子,因此,在某些特定信号的刺激下ELF5因子对某些基因可起到开关作用。ELF5激活的基因大部分参与调节上皮细胞的形成及功能。更重要的是,通过更近一步的深入研究,研究人员发现ELF5因子在调节女性乳汁分泌方面具有重要作用。

怀孕期间,激素的变化促使乳腺产生乳汁。这个控制机制是复杂的。ELF5因子促使某些特定细胞分化为乳腺细胞以应对机体激素水平的变化。

研究表明,如果小鼠敲除了ELF5基因,则小鼠在怀孕期间无乳腺上皮细胞生长。相反,如果未怀孕的小鼠插入ELF5基因,则它们开始分泌乳汁。
  
在这项最新的研究中,David Gallego-Ortega博士领导研究人员探究ELF5基因在恶性乳腺癌中的作用。研究人员观察到,在乳腺癌患者体内,ELF5基因促使免疫细胞扩大面积,并促使新血管生长。这些新生血管使得癌细胞进入血液,然后转移至肺部。

Gallego-Ortega博士认为,这表明ELF5因子可促使乳腺癌患者的癌细胞早期转移至肺部。ELF5基因不仅可使乳腺癌患者的肿瘤细胞轻松转移至肺部,此外,可提高乳腺癌患者对他莫昔芬和其他抗雌激素药物的耐药性。
