成功的牙髓治疗很大程度上依赖于对根管系统解剖形态的准确性。掌握所有可能留存细菌和/或毒素的部位，妥善处理周围的组织等信息是牙髓治疗成功的必要条件。这篇研究调查了人的117颗下颌第一磨牙髓室底和根分叉区域之间是否存在根间根管和腔隙。研究对离体牙齿进行髓腔预备，并将牙齿包埋于塑料内，髓室用亚甲蓝染色后离心。通过金刚砂电锯的使用获取平均厚度为4.2 (0.145 ± 0.03 mm thickness)的牙齿切片。通过光学显微镜(125×)观察是否存在根间根管和腔隙。结果显示，9颗牙齿存在根间根管。其中，7颗牙齿存在1个根间根管，2颗牙齿存在2个根间根管。在11颗牙齿的髓室底或者根分叉处观察到根间腔隙（不通的根间根管）。每个牙齿的根间腔隙数量为1至5之间，3颗牙齿在髓室底，8颗牙齿在根分叉区域。2颗牙齿既存在1个根间根管又存在3个根间腔隙。接受观察的117颗牙齿中，18颗有1或2个根间根管，1到5个根间腔隙，或者1个根间根管和3个根间腔隙。结论：基于此项体外研究的结果以及临床机械清理这些可能存在的根间根管的难度，作者建议，通过对髓室底区域彻底的化学清理和消毒以增强此种结构封闭的可能性并降低治
