针对于精神分裂症认知障碍的新型辅助药物治疗疗效的研究越来越多，但这些研究得到的结果存在矛盾。

《英国精神病学杂志》（The British Journal of Psychiatry）9月网络版刊登的一篇研究报告的结论显示，胆碱能药物对语言学习记忆仅有微弱的改善作用，但对空间学习记忆可产生中等程度的改善，无证据支持使用谷氨酸及血清素药物作为认知功能改善的独立疗法。胆碱能及谷氨酸药物可改善阴性及全身症状，血清素药物可对阳性症状产生改善作用。【原文下载】

本研究对精神分裂症认知及症状改善药物的相对疗效进行了比较，分析有改善希望的认知领域，并确定对联合认知校正的治疗性研究效果有扩大作用的可选药物。

研究者对26项在精神分裂症或分裂情感障碍患者中进行的胆碱能、谷氨酸及血清素受体药物双盲安慰剂对照试验进行了分析。

结果发现，作用于胆碱能受体的药物对语言学习记忆产生了微弱的改善作用（d=0.23，P=0.06），多奈哌齐，一种特定类型的胆碱能受体激动剂，对空间学习记忆具有中等疗效（d=0.58）。谷氨酸及血清素药物可对阴性症状产生中等的改善作用（分别为d=0.54及d=0.62），对全身症状的改善较小（分别为d=0.46及d=0.41）。血清素受体对阳性症状可产生较小的改善作用（d=0.33）。
