如今,由Tufts医学中心的Diana Bianchi博士领导的一个研究组已经在晚期妊娠的小鼠的肺中发现了3种类型的胎儿细胞。发表在2012年6月6日出版的《生殖生物学》(Biology of Reproduction)杂志预印论文栏目的这项研究使用可公开获取的数据库从最少80个胎儿细胞中提取出了重要的遗传信息。把两种不同的分析技术结合起来用于描述这些罕见的胎儿细胞的特征,揭示出了滋养层细胞(为胎儿提供营养的胎盘细胞)、间叶干细胞(之后发育成脂肪细胞、软骨细胞或骨细胞的细胞)以及免疫系统细胞的混合种群。

科研人员怀疑母亲血流中的胎儿细胞帮助她的免疫系统容忍且不攻击胎儿。在母亲的肺中检测到滋养层细胞和免疫细胞可以帮助该领域的未来的研究,以及关于诸如先兆子痫等妊娠相关并发症的研究。胎儿间叶干细胞的存在与此前的研究相符合,此前的研究报告说胎儿和胎盘细胞分化从而修复小鼠和人类受损的母亲器官。

使用这个研究组的基因表达分析技术,科研人员如今可以更好地发现母亲器官中的细胞类型,并且在这种情况下确定它们对母亲的内脏系统的可能的短期和长期影响。
