最近，南方医科大学第三附属医院的肖鸣教授研究证实，成骨细胞可以通过分泌IL-9来维持巨核细胞的功能，因为IL-9可以激动IL-9受体/Stat3信号通路促进巨核细胞生长。成骨细胞中IL-9的产生受NF-κB依赖性雷帕霉素复合物1（mTORC1）信号转导机制的负反馈调节，其原理是mTORC1会抑制成骨细胞中IL-9的产生并抑制巨核细胞增殖，而mTORC1灭活模型小鼠中IL-9水平则会升高，巨核细胞和血小板数量都有明显增加。

在小鼠模型中，研究人员发现注射IL-9可以刺激巨核细胞的增殖，而当给药中和体内IL-9或者大量消耗IL-9时，巨核细胞的增殖就会受到抑制。更重要的一点发现是，低剂量IL-9注射可以有效预防化疗导致的血小板减少症（CIT），并加速CIT后的血小板恢复。由此表明，IL-9是巨核细胞维持生长的必要调节剂，也是治疗血小板减少症的潜在药物。
