来自智利安第斯大学的研究人员们表示：“我们的发现很有前景，首先因为这是非侵入性的方式，对患者来说可以减少很大的痛苦。”在这个试验中，参与者共计30名，年龄在18岁到75年之间，研究人员将他们分为三组，其中一组使用用于治疗心脏衰竭的最佳药物，第二组则使用脐带血干细胞疗法，最后一组使用安慰剂，作为对比组。其中，人类胎盘脐带取自足月产子的健康捐赠者。

研究结果显示，相比安慰剂治疗，在治疗后的一年中，干细胞疗法表现出持续改善心脏的泵血能力，不仅更大的改进了日常功能状态和生活质量，而且治疗过程是安全的，没有副作用或同种抗体的出现。

研究人员先前评估骨髓来源干细胞治疗的潜力，然而，静脉脐带血干细胞却从未得到过评估。后者类型是尤为吸引人的，因为他们很便利，可以广泛使用，缺点在于有可能导致免疫并发症，以及来自胚胎干细胞的伦理问题。

“在试验工程中，我们发现标准药物治疗是控制心力衰竭的第二选择，病人疾病有发展，往往需要更多侵入性治疗，如机械心室辅助装置和心脏移植。”

心脏衰竭指的是心脏肌肉无法有效的泵血，这一疾病影响着全世界约3700万人。尽管医学进步了，但是诊断出心力衰竭的患者寿命不会多于五年，这些研究结果可以为患者提供一个有前途的新疗法。
