在人体免疫系统中,IgM不仅在免疫反应中发挥重要作用,也参与维持重要的免疫平衡:可以控制B细胞的生理发育,而B细胞负责产生并释放抗体。此外,IgM还可以调节血液IgE的浓度,以此确保免疫系统的平衡。但是一旦缺乏IgM,平衡就会打破。IgE在过敏反应中发挥重要作用,IgE失去控制会导致形成血斑、激活肥大细胞和炎症反应,最终导致血管收缩并受损。这项研究的资深作者Christoph Binder领导的团队和论文第一作者Dimitrios Tsiantoulas一起在动物模型中发现并验证了这个新机理。

“这是第一次发现IgE本身也可以引发血管发生炎症发应,我们还发现抑制IgE可以防止血管损伤。”Binder如是说。这个新发现可能为维持免疫系统平衡提供新的治疗策略。“我们成功发现了IgM的一种新功能:它在过敏发应的发生过程中可能发挥重要作用。” Tsiantoulas解释道。

尽管IgM缺陷或者完全缺失非常罕见,但是有约2.5%的人群IgM含量在降低。
