Grover博士和他的同事使用来自全国健康和营养调查数据（从2003年至2010），开发了一个模型估计不同体重对成年患者发生糖尿病和心血管疾病风险的影响。这一数据涉及到4000多人，这些个体数据也被用于分析多余体重对健康生命时间缩短的影响。

他们的研究结果估计，非常肥胖的个体寿命可能缩短长达8年，肥胖的人可能缩短长达6年，那些超重的人可能会缩短三年。此外，与具有健康体重的人（身体质量指数定义为18.5-25）相比，超重和肥胖个体生命时间缩短很明显。
