研究人员已经发现来自人体肠道的单一微生物具有降解我们饮食中最复杂的碳水化合物的能力。这是类似的第一个发现,有可能在将来某天用于鉴定能够促进人体健康的新型益生菌产品。这项由英国纽卡斯尔大学细胞与分子生物科学研究所的Harry Gilbert教授领导的研究团队完成的最新研究昨日发表在Nature上。

人体肠道中的微生物对人体健康和生理有重要影响,因为它们能够帮助降解食物中我们不能消化的物质,如淀粉和纤维。而肠道微生物最主要的营养来源就是我们饮食中不能代谢的碳水化合物。其中最复杂的碳水化合物就是植物多糖-鼠李半乳糖醛酸聚糖 II(RG-II),这种物质在红酒中含量较高。

此前研究认为只有成群的细菌能够代谢和破坏RG-II,然而这项研究却发现肠道中单一的微生物也能够完成这个任务。

Gilbert教授说道:“我们的研究报道了机体中完成的这个过程的高度复杂性。这迈出了明白人体肠道微生物工作方式的激动人心的一步,对未来研究有重要影响。”

这个国际团队发现RG-II能够通过一种叫做糖苷水解酶的细菌酶被代谢,它可以靶向分解大肠中复杂的碳水化合物。

能够代谢RG-II的细菌含有几个编码一种此前未知功能的蛋白质的基因。研究人员发现了这些基因中的7个基因可以产生糖苷水解酶(能够分解将糖连接成多糖的糖苷键),从而促进了RG—II的分解。

这七个酶中的每一个都是一个新的酶家族的基本成员,其中三个可以破坏糖苷键,而糖苷键在此前被认为对生物学攻击不敏感,因此这些酶表现出了新的催化功能。

Gilbert教授说道:“这项研究具有应用潜力,因为明白这些高度复杂的碳水化合物如何被机体利用将为我们提供机会开发新一代的可以提高人体健康的益生菌产品。这个领域还有更令人激动的工作需要完成。完全明白复杂碳水化合物被肠道微生物利用的机制和药物有关系,因为这些微生物群体对人体健康有重要影响。”
